HOW TO JOIN
Thank you for your interest in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. I am LTJG Mary Roat, the Commanding Officer of the USS Rochester CA-124 Division. I am pleased to have this opportunity to provide you with information concerning our unit and the Sea Cadet Program.
The USS Rochester CA-124 Division is attached to the Rochester Navy Operational Reserve Center, at 439 Paul Road, Rochester, NY, just west of the Greater Rochester International Airport. Our division typically drills the first Saturday and Sunday of each month from 0800 to 1600 daily. We currently have approximately ten NSCC Cadets (ages 13-17), eight NLCC Cadets (ages 11-13), and a staff of seven officers and instructors. Cadets wear regulation U. S. Navy uniforms, with NSCC patches to distinguish them from active duty navy personnel. Unit activities include military drill, leadership & personal development training, as well as general Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps classroom training. Field trips include touring active and reserve military facilities, hands-on experience conducting maritime related tasks and a variety of military specialties.
Each drill weekend consists of physical fitness training, personnel inspections, General Military Training, and Close Order Drill (marching). Each drill weekend we try to schedule at least one special event such as an educational and/or recreational field trip, or a special speaker/demonstration to present to the Cadets On-board the Reserve Center.
As with everything, there are costs associated. These include:
Annual enrollment for insurance is $75. This fee is included in the first year's $135 enrollment fee.
$50 uniform deposit. This will be returned when cadets are no longer in the program and they return all uniforms within the month of disenrollment. We expect the cadets to take care of the various uniform items and return them to the unit when the cadet leaves the program; if not returned then the $50 will be non-refundable.
Normally we can issue most items from available supplies at no additional cost; however, if we are unable to do so, then purchase becomes the responsibility of the cadet/parent. Most common items requiring purchase are nametapes, boots and dress shoes.
The remainder of the first year $135 enrollment fee is $5 for a unit ball cap and $5 for PT gear.
Attendance at two-week training's typically cost between $60 and $180. One is required every year.
Orientation meetings are held each drill Saturday at 1000 in the Sea Cadet Classroom on the 2nd Deck of the Reserve Center. At least one parent must attend. To find out when we drill you can visit our Calendar in the Operations section of this Website. If you would like more information, feel free to email me, Mary Roat LTJG, NSCC, or our Training Officer, Linda Patterson LTJG, NSCC.
